How long does it take to dry out a house after water damage?

For a common water loss that gets caught early, plan on about three to five days of drying equipment running in the house. That is the honest middle of the range. How long it really takes to dry out a house depends on what got wet, how dirty the water was, and how long it sat before drying started. Hardwood floors, plaster walls, and finished basements run longer, often a week or more. The real answer is not a date on a calendar. A house is dry when the moisture meters say the materials are dry, not when a set number of days has passed.
The honest answer is a range, not a date
Nobody can promise you an exact finish time on day one, and anyone who does is guessing. What we can do is give you an honest range and then measure our way to the end of it.
For a clean-water loss, caught fast, in a room or two, three to five days of equipment is typical. That covers most burst supply lines and appliance leaks we see in the Alle-Kiski Valley. Bigger footprints and dirtier water push that out. Hardwood floors hold water in a way that resists fast drying and can take a week or two. Plaster, dense insulation, and below-grade basement walls are slow by nature. A large loss across a whole floor is a different job than a wet closet, and the timeline reflects that.
Here is the part that matters most. The EPA says wet materials should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to stop mold. If you dry the wet areas inside that window, in most cases mold will not grow. That is why the first day counts most. The clock starts the moment the water stops, not the moment a crew shows up.
What actually moves the timeline
Four things decide whether your house dries in three days or three weeks.
Material. Water leaves tile and sealed concrete quickly. It clings to wood, drywall, plaster, carpet pad, and insulation. A kitchen with tile floors dries faster than a carpeted bedroom over a wood subfloor, even with the same amount of water. Hardwood is the classic slow case because the boards trap moisture underneath and release it gradually.
How dirty the water was. Clean water from a supply line is the fastest case. Gray water from an appliance is worse. The slowest case is Category 3 water, which covers sewage backups and outside floodwater. Dirty water soaks into carpet, pad, and drywall, and those often have to come out before drying can start. That removal adds days a clean-water loss skips.
How long it sat. Water that sat for hours dries far faster than water that sat for days. Moisture wicks upward into drywall and outward into framing the longer it stands. A leak found overnight is a much shorter job than one discovered after a weekend away. This is the single biggest variable you can control, and it is why fast response saves both time and materials.
Weather and humidity. Drying pulls water out of materials and into the air, then carries that air away. When the outside air is already hot and damp, that job gets harder. FEMA says hot, humid weather slows natural drying a lot. That is why drying gear and air conditioning are not optional in those conditions. Cold weather slows drying too. A sealed, dried-out room beats open windows on a muggy day every time.
Why we dry to the meter, not the calendar
You cannot tell a wall is dry by touching it. The surface can feel dry while the core is still soaked, and that hidden moisture is what feeds mold and warps materials later.
A pro uses a pin-type moisture meter that reads the water still inside the material. FEMA treats wood framing as wet above 20 percent. From 15 to 20 percent it is borderline. Only at or below 15 percent is it safe to close up. Those numbers, not a guess, decide when a material is done. The crew rechecks it after drying, before anyone rebuilds.
This is why a job runs until the meters read dry, not until a set date. Say the gear comes down on day three because the calendar says so, but the subfloor still reads wet. Now that water is sealed inside the walls. FEMA is blunt about what happens next: drying too little before you rebuild traps moisture, and trapped moisture rots the structure and can harm your health. Drying to the meter looks slower on paper. It is far cheaper in the end.

What slows drying down
A few common things stretch a timeline, and knowing them helps you understand your own estimate.
- Trapped water in cavities. Wet insulation behind a wall or water under hardwood dries slowly and sometimes has to be opened up to reach.
- Contaminated water. Sewage and floodwater mean removal comes first, and removal adds days before drying starts.
- High indoor humidity. Without dehumidification, moisture pulled out of the walls just goes back into the air and back into the materials.
- Power loss. Fans, dehumidifiers, and heaters need electricity. A loss during an outage or before power is restored waits.
- Cold snaps and heat waves. Both extremes fight the drying process, which is real in a Pittsburgh winter. The January 2026 storm that burst pipes across the metro is a good example: freezing weather causes the damage and then slows the drying.
None of these mean something is wrong. They mean the house needs more time, and the meters will show it.
When to call a crew, and when you can handle it
A small, clean spill you caught in minutes, wiped up, and dried with a fan is a homeowner job. Keep an eye on it for a couple of days and make sure it stays dry.
Call a pro if any of these are true: the water spread across a room, soaked into carpet or drywall, sat for more than a day, came from a sewage backup, or reached a finished basement. Those cases need pumps, real drying gear, and meter readings that a household fan cannot give you. Guess wrong and you get a mold problem in a wall you cannot see.
